After some success in the mid 70s with the all-girl band The Runaways, and as a solo artist, Jett formed The Blackhearts in 1980 by placing an an ad in the L.A. Weekly. After some initial reshuffeling and an European tour, the band recorded their first album titled “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” in 1981.
The studio lineup of for the album was Jett on lead guitar and vocals, Ricky Byrd on guitar, Gary Ryan on bass, and Lee Crystal on drums. The album was released 18 November 1981 and the title track was released as a single on 20 January 1982, jumping to the top of the charts on March 20 and staying there for seven weeks. The song only managed number 4 on the UK charts.
“I Love Rock ‘n Roll” was a cover version of a song originally written in 1975 by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of Arrows. Jett had seen Arrows perform the song on their weekly television series in 1976 and first recorded it in 1979.
The song (and the album) turned out to be a one-hit-wonder, they have not had chart success since. That does not mean that Joan Jet and the Blackhearts are dead, in fact they are very much alive and spend time touring, performing and turning out prodigious amounts of rock ‘n roll.
