Lipps Inc. (a pun on “lip sync”) was a studio group formed in Minneapolis by Steven Greenberg, who wrote and produced all of the group’s music, and who also played several musical instruments. The lead singer and saxophonist was Cynthia Johnson, and the rest of the group consisted of a changing group of session musicians.
Lipps Inc. released their debut album “Mouth to Mouth” in 1980. The second single from this album, “Funkytown”, reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts in the US. Further singles were less successful.
“Funkytown”, written by Steven Greenberg was released on February 18, 1980. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 21 May 1980 and held that position till 27 June. The song also topped the Billboard Dance charts in 1980 and reached number 1 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and The Netherlands. It reached number 2 in the UK.
Lipps Inc. were a true one-hit wonder with “Funky Town” being their only US Top 40 hit.
The group continued to record in the 80’s with a changing lineup, but failed to see the success they’d had with their first hit. They had some dance hits throughout the 1980s, including “How Long?”, which reached number 4 on the US dance chart and “Designer Music” which reached number 11, both in 1981. The band released their final album,”4″, in 1983 and dissolved in 1985.
The “Funkytown” in the song is New York City.
“Funkytown” was featured on the soundtrack of the movie “Shrek 2”, and a cover of the song by Alvin And The Chipmunks returned the song to the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2008.
